In Appreciation of Arbor Creek Residents

We had a wonderful turn out on Friday, September 18th, for Arbor Creek Resident Appreciation Day Cookout.  Residents spun for fantastic prizes on the brand-new spin wheel.  It was a great time and wonderful way to express our gratitude to all the outstanding residents here at Arbor Creek.

Arbor Creek to Offer MSU Scholarship

Thanks to a Times Record News story, one lucky graduate student will get a free apartment for a year.

The gift is valued at $7,500 and is one of the largest scholarships made available to a Midwestern State University graduate student.

It got its start from a Times Record News story published Jan. 7. The interview with Dr. Patti Hamilton, MSU's new dean of its graduate program, told how Hamilton was trying to double MSU's graduate student enrollment from 12 to 25 percent of the university's total enrollment.

Meanwhile, Scott McDonald, a regional property manager with Maven Management, read the story online from his office in Chicago. He reads the Times Record News regularly because he visits Wichita Falls several times a year to check on Maven Management properties, which include Arbor Creek Apartments that sit near MSU.

The online story got him thinking. He liked the aggressive growth plans that Hamilton was pursuing. He showed it to his boss, who told him to "do something for them."

This wasn't unusual. McDonald and Maven Management have often tried to play an active role in the communities where their properties are located. They've tried to help public schools, MSU and Sheppard Air Force Base in the past.

"We planted a tree the last three years at Ben Franklin (Elementary) for Arbor Day. The Ben Franklin students drew pictures that we post in our leasing office," McDonald said.

At MSU, the company has helped with its housing department, its athletic department and now with its graduate program.

McDonald came up with the idea of offering a free, one-bedroom apartment to a student in need. "I called Jeannie from our housing office and got the ball rolling from there," he said. "Because we are located so close to campus, we already house a great number of MSU students. We saw this as an opportunity to give back to the university, help them grow the graduate program and, of course, to help a deserving student who may need to defray some expenses."

Maven Management currently operates 360 apartments at Arbor Creek Apartments, located at 4000 Weeks Park Lane, and recently renovated 90 percent of them - and the parking lots - since purchasing the property five years ago.

The free apartment that will be gifted for one year to a student includes newly upgraded living and dining areas, a full kitchen, a bedroom, a large closet space, and access to the complex's new fitness and business centers.

MSU will select the first student for its Arbor Creek Apartments Scholarship for the fall 2009 semester.
